As an indicator of our sustainable practices we are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

We would like to ask you to help us . . . .

Green Tourism

What we are doing

  • We use energy efficient bulbs wherever practical
  • Wherever possible, we have ‘A’ rated appliances to reduce energy consumption
  • All baths are fitted with over-bath showers as a water saving alternative
  • All WCs are fitted with dual flush mechanisms
  • Windows are double glazed and draught free
  • Wherever possible, we use local suppliers
  • We provide guests with information on local transport
  • We provide information on local walks. We promote the guided walks led by our local Ranger, which encourage responsible hiking, a greater awareness of the problems associated with path erosion and a caring attitude towards the countryside through an enhanced knowledge of its history and wildlife.
  • We offer to collect those guests who choose to arrive by train and return them to the station.
  • We operate a no smoking policy in all buildings
  • All heating is thermostatically controlled
  • Native trees have been planted to encourage wildlife
  • The business is promoted mainly by website and email rather than paper products.
  • Envelopes and scrap paper are re-used .
  • Our laundry is air dried outside whenever possible, saving energy and benefiting from the natural bleaching power of the sun
  • Environmentally friendly cleaning products, such as eco cloths, are used wherever possible
  • Green kitchen and garden waste is composted and used on the garden
  • We have free range hens and grow organic fruit and vegetables, which are for sale to our guests when available
  • Used printer cartridges are re-cycled
What you can do
  • Use our recycling facilities by the barn: Reduce, Re-use and Recycle
  • Help reduce energy consumption by switching off lights when the room is empty, closing your curtains in winter to keep heat in the room, and turn down the thermostatic control on the radiator to a comfortable level.
  • Think about water consumption when taking a shower, and don’t wash your hands or clean your teeth under a running tap – put the plug in instead! Let us know if you notice any leaking or dripping taps – they lose a lot more than you think!
  • Only turn heating up higher if necessary.
  • Use the septic tanks responsibly by using the bins provided for anything other than natural waste and toilet paper. Avoid use of chemicals, which kill the natural cleaning cycle
  • Buy products with less packaging
  • Respect the Country Code, and dispose of litter carefully. Litter can be very harmful to wildlife.
  • Use our recycling facilities – for bottles, paper, cans and plastic. Follow the guidelines carefully.
  • Buy local food and services whilst you are here. This supports the local community that you have come to visit and reduces food miles.
  • Use public transport. Go by bus or train, or enjoy the wide range of beautiful walks right on your doorstep.
  • Bring your bikes – they can be kept safely outside or locked in the shed, as required.
